Abstract:
I reported the distribution and planting arrangement of premises forests around scattered houses in Iide town. Premises forests are divided into two types, the I-type and L-type. In 2009, there were 184 I-types, where trees were planted on the west side of houses, and 43 L-types, where trees were planted on the west and north sides of houses. Most percent of the premises forests (96.5%) were dominated by conifers. The I- and L-types were effective in protecting houses from the monsoons coming from the west in winter. A tree census revealed 248 individual trees representing 18 species in 4 premises forests. Cryptomeria japonica dominated each of the four sites, and Abies homolepis, Zelkova serrata, and Acer palmatum were also present. Because the height of these trees was greater than the roof of the houses, the canopy of premises forests formed the skyline of the scattered houses. Because of the change of premises forests based on their distributions in 1950 and 1974, I postulated that the I-type premises forests were the original type, and that the L-type premises forests are an updated variation. However, the I- and L-types were changeable. The cultural landscape in Iide town has developed by combining scattered houses in the alluvial fan and skyline of premises forests around each dwelling site.
