Abstract:
The present study tried to confirm a multidimensional structure of the semihealth status among high school students in Japan, and to examine the relationship between the status and living environmental factors. The self-reported questionnaire was administered in 2008. Five hundred and eighty-eight students in high schools replied to this questionnaire. The principal component analysis was performed to the eligible data in order to extract the multidimensional structure of thesemihealth status. Four principal components were extracted as compound scales of the structure. The components were interpreted as indices assessed amounts of the semihealth condition (the first principal component), “physical-mental” condition (the second principal component), “serious-slight” condition (the third principal component), and “behavior's irregularity-internal medicine” condition (the fourth principal component). Especially, the first principal component could be interpreted as the semihealth index (SHI) indicated synthesis semihealth conditions. Using the multidimensional criteria of the semihealth, the status was assessed. In high school students, the semihealth status was closely associated with vigorous physical activities after school lesson, the time of reading at home, and the time of watching television at home.
