Abstract:
A questionnaire survey about forests was conducted among first-year students from one high school in the city of Kobe, Japan , in 2009. This study was designed for two purposes: 1) to exam ine students’ expectations of forest functions in different types of forests and 2) to examine factors relate d to these expectations. For the first purpose, this study showed that students had hig her expectations of natural forests than artificial forests in most functions. For the second purpose, factors related th ese expectations inclu ded the type of forest, knowledge about forests, experience visiting forests, and gender. Re spondents who knew less about the kenaf plant e xpected some functions su ch as c arbon storage, a place for education, a place to commune with nature, and the production of mushrooms and other non-wood forest products in natural forests. Fe male students tended to prefer non -production functions.
