Abstract:
The conservation and restoration of the Oguraike wetland has become a critical issue during the recent construction of water and greenery networks in the Kinki region, Japan. This required identification of both the original natural landscape of the wetland and the associated cultural context. Literature from the Edo period was critically evaluated based on a comparison analysis of spatial form change to determine the original landscape. The results showed that there was little significant change in the shape or spatial distribution of the Oguraike wetland throughout the Edo period, and 7 kinds of floral landscape elements ,10 kinds of faunal landscape elements , 2 kinds of astronomic landscape elements, 4 kinds of artificial landscape elements, and 12 kinds of human activities were identified. During the early to middle Edo period, moon appreciation was an important cultural attraction facilitated by the wetland. Following the end of Edo period, lotus appreciation became a significant cultural aspect of the landscape of Kyoto city.
