Abstract:
The research focusing on the preference of natural landscapes is of great importance for environmental management from the view point of foreigners. While selecting landscapes for special care and protection one should take into consideration not only the diversity of their natural peculiarities and usefulness but also their preferences. People in different cultures differ in their landscape preferences due to the ethno-cultural factors as well as historical, social, and living environment. The purpose of this study is to compare the landscape appreciation in Russia and Japan, with different traditions of landscape recognition. The photo database of landscapes, both similar and unique, for Russia and Japan was made using the same methods. The respondents in both countries were suggested to select photo images of different landscapes according to their personal perception as well as the attractiveness of landscapes images. The photos will be used in the experiments on the landscape comparison by general people. This result of photo selection showed us the representative sceneries by Russian and Japanese researchers and the effect of landscape experiences in Japan.
