Abstract:
In Costa Rica the urban environment has drastically changed during the last sixty years. Today, a new urban plan for the Great Metropolitan Area is proposing the introduction of greenways to build a green network in the city. This study presents the results of a survey about residents' position towards the greenways before their implementation. The results showed that although most of the respondents were unfamiliar with the concept, attitudes towards greenways were remarkably positive. People would like to have greenways and use them mostly for recreational purposes and to be in contact with nature. Respondents are not completely satisfied with the current green spaces that the city offers, and most of them perceive “lack of safety” as an important subject that should be considered from the planning stage. The study also identifies the necessity of maintenance, vegetation management, continuous surveillance, as well as citizen participation and involvement as crucial components that should be strengthened for the successful introduction of greenways.
