Abstract:
As global interest continues to rise in ‘green’ tourism and ecotourism, a range of solutions has been proposed to mitigate the environmental impact of visitors to areas of natural importance, including 'eco-taxes', entrance fees, and government payments to local communities in return for environmental services. This paper introduces one such solution in the form of the 'Visitor Payback' scheme currently being implemented in the English Lake District through a partnership between conservation organizations and tourism-related businesses. The authors analyze some of the unique and potentially transferable aspects of 'Visitor Payback', and report on the results of a survey carried out into visitor awareness of, and visitor and business attitudes to, the scheme, which offer pointers for both its further expansion in the Lake District, and its potential as a model project for other similar situations.
