Abstract:
The purpose of the present study was to examine environmental characteristics based on the assessment index regarding daily living of the mental disorders in a community through a nationwide investigation from a practical viewpoint of community nursing activities. The self-rating questionnaire was composed of 33 items included the current environmental conditions (CEC) and degree of importance in the environment (DIE) regarding mental health and welfare in a community. The questionnaire was mailed to public health departments in every municipality in Japan. As a result, it was pointed out that CEC had the lower assessment level and higher dispersion compared to DIE. To examine the characteristics of community environment by the population scale in municipalities, a change of mean deviation was represented as a pattern. The change was classified into three patterns, type I, type II and type III, based on the population scale. Type I was characterized by showing the extremes of the largest and smallest scales regarding mean deviations. Type II had upward or downward bars on the figure in medium phases of population scales. In type III, adjoining scales included the small phase or large phase were to have the opposite direction at the base line, respectively. It was suggested that the index was useful to assess environmental conditions regarding daily living of the mental disorders in the community.
