Abstract:
Senecio madagascariensis Poiret (fireweed) is an alien species that was found in Tokushima Pref., Naruto City, in 1976. It is necessary to note that fireweed spreads to ranches and pasture grounds and poisons the domestic animals who consume it, such as horses and cows. Damage caused by the spread of fireweed has already been reported in foreign countries. Australia is currently spending A$2 million or more to exterminate the fireweed that has invaded pasture grounds. There has been rapid expansion in Kansai region in Japan, primarily in term of development ground and rivers. Authors have researched the biological characteristics of fireweed and arrived at the conclusion that there is a possibility that the effect of the allelopathic effects thought from the distribution form. In this study, we aimed to clarify the allelopathic effects of fireweed on other plants. As a result, the amount of germination that took place in the districts in which experiments on fireweed were conducted was less than that of the control group in the germination experiment as well as the petri dishes group. However, the amount of growth increased. Based on the results of this study, it is thought that fireweed has allelopathic effects on other plants. It seems that this influenced the rapid spread in the distribution of fireweed.
