Abstract:
This study reveals desired green space in urban areas and interactions with such space through “Satoyama” related activities. A survey was conducted with members of organizations that are active in the Satoyama related activities. Green space in rural agricultural villages is desired in urban areas where residents manage green space and use this space to enjoy learning and socialization. The perception of “Satoyama” among the participants was an area like an farming village;described as mountains, woodlands, farmlands, and grass fields. The participants, by interacting with green space, expect bio diversity, learning experiences, and socialization opportunities. However, there was not enough uniformed recognition with regard to directions of its management. As for the activity programs, observations and maintenance of nature are the main focus; and the closer that the activities are held to urban areas, the more the participants preferred rural and agricultural activities. Also, supports for learning experiences and travels are carried out as the participants initiate themselves. The trends of the activity programs have been shifting from nature observations to management activities over the years. The potential for Satoyama to provide learning and socialization opportunities has been recognized, and environmental maintenance and creation of socialization opportunities are now expected through management activities.
