Abstract:
To establish efficient measures against desertification, we need to clarify the relationships between the advance of desertification, and local natural and socio-economic conditions. Our objectives were to show the relationships between these factors in Ganqika Town, located in the Horqin Sandy land of northeast China, using GIS techniques with temporal satellite images and village-based statistical data. From the results of principal component and cluster analyzes, the villages of Ganqika Town were categorized into six clusters and plotted as a village characteristics map. This map visually expresses the overall conditions of the villages in terms of the state of desertification and human activities. These results were also supported by the information collected in interviews with local residents. Finally, we considered future options for combating desertification in the area. The results of this study will help plan how to combat desertification at the village level and to improve decision-making at the town scale in this area.
