Abstract:
In this paper, I measured the increase in vehicle use by suburbanization using per capita daily vehicle-miles traveled(DVMT) data in urbanized areas. Not only variables in urbanized areas but also those in surrounding metropolitan areas affected per capita DVMT. The range of population density elasticity is -0.3 - -0.5 and it appears to be higher than price elasticity. Per capita DVMT increases by around 16% as population ratio of metropolitan area to the urbanized area doubles. The definition and treatment of population density is crucial as the elasticity varies.
