Abstract:
The motivation of residents directly involved in street flower-plating and maintenance were investigated in two residential districts in Sapporo. In Higashi Naebo, in the Eastern Ward, there was evidence of long-term participation (12 years), whereas in Tokiwa, in the Southern Ward, evidence of recently started participation (3 years), was found. The pattern of resident participation, organization, support provision and activity continuance differed between the two residential districts, however the motives for participation proved to be the same | street beautification and better inter-relations among residents. Results revealed that participants from both areas shared similar opinions and were equally motivated. Participants from Tokiwa appeared to be more enthusiastic than those in Higashi Naebo. The main problem faced by participants in Higashi Naebo was not enough flower species for planting, whereas in Tokiwa it was lack of time to participate. The results are discussed with regard to optimising the interaction between city administration and local residence involved in street flower-planting and maintenance.
