Abstract:
This study aims to clarify issues of schoolyard landscaping of elementary school and their orientation by grasping the actual situation of landscape elements in schoolyards and its relationship with children's images and cognition. The eight municipal elementary schools in Chiba City were selected as case study schools. This study carried out environmental research on schoolyard landscapes and a questionnaire survey. In schoolyard environmental research, this study looked at the arrangement of the buildings, the schoolyard area, the playground area and the green coverage area, the type and location of landscape elements such as athletic facilities, playground equipment, outdoor learning facilities and natural landscaping. The questionnaire survey was conducted with fifth graders. The main contents of the questionnaire were concerned with the schoolyard landscape and its image and cognition. The results of this study are as follows: 1) In order to increase the frequency of children's use of schoolyard and to attached their schoolyards, it is necessary to plan the schoolyard landscape so that children feel that schoolyard is large with abundant greenery. 2) Based on the children's evaluation of the size of the schoolyard area, the standard effective playground area in schoolyard should be more than 9,500m2. 3) In order to increase the frequency of use of the schoolyard, it is necessary to secure a large enough playground more than 30m2/person, and to use grass in playgrounds. 4) It is necessary to provide children with attractive places and facilities such as an artificial mound, the places like secret camps, various athletic facilities and symbol trees.
