Abstract:
This study investigated Aizuwakamatsu City, a provincial town, to gain an insight into the attitudes of residents towards their local environments. The methods and goals of conservation of local environments were also investigated by surveying the attitudes of the residents to Akai-yachi, a moor for which conservation measures have been investigated. The study showed that fondness of residents for living environments was affected by their local environment and that, in general, residents who were fonder of the area showed greater desire to live there permanently. Factors that affected fondness for living environments were then analyzed. Landmarks of the region, familiar historical and cultural assets, and environmental resources were found to affect views that are fondly remembered by the residents. The results of the study suggest that the protection of these landmarks, historical and cultural assets, and environmental resources will increase opportunities for residents to remember views with fondness and feel affection for them, and will improve their wish to live there permanently. Thus, the objectives, indices, and future directions of the projects for conserving local environments and construction projects should be decided on a region-by-region basis, taking into consideration the factors that may affect the fondness of residents for their regions such as landmarks, familiar historical and cultural assets, and natural resources.
