Abstract:
The organic carbon stock of topsoil to a depth of 30 cm was estimated for Japan using areal data for land use-soil combinations, based on national raster data and available datasets on soil organic carbon density. The total soil organic carbon stock in Japan was estimated to be 2.68Pg C (1Pg = 1015g). Considering the land area of Japan, contribution to global carbon sequestration by Japanese topsoil suggested relatively high. Mapping the mean soil organic carbon stock on a national grid at a 1-km scale effectively illustrated the land use-soil combinations that determine carbon distribution in topsoil.
